All the tasty little treats! All so good on this Friday morning, Juneteenth.

My little note about birds: I lived on the edge of an old woods on the Chesapeake Bay and delighted in all the wildlife. And then came ...the whippoorwill...The first night he mournfully sang " whippoorwill" to attract his lady love from dusk until dawn. It was charming. The second night, less so. By the third night, I wanted to "holler" at him to "Shut Up", an expression I NEVER use. He was gone after that night and I never heard him again. I hope they found each other...and moved on!

Haha! I laughed at your story. I sympathise. I usually wear earplugs in spring-early summer, till the awful bird vanishes. Don't know where it goes and don't care!

I've developed an affection for all furry critters, realizing that they're just trying to survive and live peacefully (like us humans). Knowing that birds are the ancestors of dinosaurs is really fascinating!

That little time capsule/puzzle box from hubby's grandma is such a treasure! It makes me think about leaving something like that for my own grandkids, to open after I'm gone. Hmm...what to put inside? Perhaps the US penny, which is no longer being minted. Or some other item that's been relegated to the dustbin of history? I'll have to give this some further thought...

My husband has decided to give it to our grandson when he's older. Somehow, OH feels it needs to be passed on. I agree.

Oh Granny’s treasure box is the stuff of fairytales!

I also love birds and Robert MacFarlane’s writing. Both are so grounding to our life on this planet

I'm so glad you found pleasure in the writings, this week, Janine. Thanks so much.

I have grown used to our synchronicity Prue but this post is simply chocked with it! Firstly, I too have followed The Marginalian since it was BrainPickings back in the day AND I just got Maria Popova's latest book 'Traversal' which seems fascinating! Cannot wait to dive in. Also, your mention of Robert MacFarlane caught my eye because only yesterday a dear friend handed me a copy of 'The Old Ways' which was a huge bestseller. He weaves landscape, wayfaring, literature, etymology, history and nature together as he writes. She insisted I read (knowing I would enjoy) so although I haven't even opened it yet, I am suggesting for you as well. The discovery of your husband's little box is absolutely not a coincidence, I truly believe that and such a charming find! Love your pics and excerpt also. And I agree about the "pimping" of one's work - what you say is true and readers love hearing about your day-to-day. I know I do! xo

There's this wave of connection vibrating across the universe with you and I, and could you believe that just before I opened my computer to check emails, I was polishing the teardrop crystal and like Pollyanna, watching the sparkles dance across the walls?

Macfarlane is perhaps my favourite wordsmith and has a way with describing the natural world that is so lyrical. Am noting down your recommends, also Traversal is new to me. Thank you for that.

As for the box - isn't it wonderful? My husband has decided to gift it to our grandson, the Batten hair-apparent, when he is a little older.

I hadn't thought of it as being true to myself, but I think you might be right. XXXX

Love learning more about your various birds, Prue. The Tawny Frogmouth is a delight - what a photo! - and similar to the North American Whippoorwill and Chuck-Wills-Widow. I've never seen one in real life. The treasure unearthed from that tiny puzzle box is a story for future generations. Thank goodness you're a writer!

Birds really are a gift to the world, aren't they? The music beneath the business of life if we just take the time to listen.
