How fast he’s growing!! And a nine-hour sleep already? Wow! You’re obviously tiring him out nicely. There’s so much for a new pup to learn! So much to experience. My neighbour’s poodle-cross has matured much more rapidly than expected. I’m hoping you too will have that same reward. Hugs dear Prue. A pleasure to share these firsts. 🤗🤗💕💕
See my reply to Libby, Beth. I spoke way too soon. That'll teach me. Still, swings and roundabouts and yin and yang. Just remind me where the matchsticks are for my eyes and any supplies of energy-boosters!
Love hearing about all the firsts, he's adorable. Nine hour sleep, how fabulous, wise move to rest while he is resting, just like new mums really. Xxx ❤️🧡💛
I sympathise. I'm a really light sleeper which means a spider crawling across the ceiling will wake me. When I wake, I find it hard to get back to sleep unless I tell myself the next stage of the book I might be writing. That generally does the trick, which probably means I write the most boring books ever!!!
Yes Im a very light sleeper too up at least a couple of times a night, also get restless legs too so sometimes I'm up more , and often spend a couple of hrs downstairs, the medication for it has helped but still get really bad nights. I think too, many years of working night duty didn't help. But I'm used to it .
Sorry but I have to disagree Prue, your books are definately not boring I have loved them xx
Ah yes the ups and downs of a new puppy!! This phase will soon morph into another one - and you'll all be sleeping better. It's definitely 'ruff' at times lol but SO worthwhile when you see the adoring way he looks at you. Pics are delightful! xo
Golly, he is! Too much for his own good! Friend and subscriber, Sue Sutherland Wood told me the term 'land shark' to describe the mouthy puppy teeth. Oh my God! I'm perpetually offering him rubber alternatives rather than my toes, hands, the mattress base, the knobs on the chest of drawers, the sisal rugs... You get the drift, I'm sure.
As I got my "landshark" shortly before the Covid lockdown, my grandsons spent the first few months huddled on my couch with their toes carefully tucked beneath them! I remember a day wanting to pull my hair out as Dobbins had discovered the springy doorstop and regardless of redirection, spent 6 hours making the "sproing" noise. Ah, but then there were those sweet times napping together in the big company chair which continue even now, 5 years later. Yes, yin and yang and my mantra,"this, too, shall pass... I hope!"
We don't have pets or children, but I DO have a husband who is obsessed with those springy doorstops - he sproings (repeatedly!) every one he comes across. 🙄
My brother made him what I can only describe as a ‘sproingy activity station’ for his Christmas present - a beautifully-finished piece of wood furnished with 9 spring doorstops (three in three different metallic finishes) with a rubber doorstop in between each set of three). Absolutely BONKERS.
To my delight it hasn’t yet been screwed to the wall so it has to be held in order to be sproinged. I gather he has yet to establish ‘exactly the right place’ for it. 🤣
Prue - that freckled belly is so cute it nearly brought tears to my eyes! I can relate to the exhaustion and also the the endless joy of watching him explore, discover, and learn. Except theoretically, I can't really relate to the middle of the night bathroom breaks, because - well, cats and litter boxes. The last time I lived with a puppy, the night shift wasn't my responsibility. But I'm rooting for you and know you'll find your balance soon. Thanks for keeping us posted on all the progress.
He is pretty good the way he settles after a wee and I'd rather the wee outside than in.
He's asleep as I write and so my plan today is as he sleeps, I'm onto more of my MS. We're up and dressed by 7, so while hubby babysits, I quickly dash off a swim and today I got both a 10 minute swim AND a 45 min walk! The return of those to my fold has made me feel a new woman. Husband sleeps while dog sleeps.
I've seen pups doing it on Instagram and almost felt like screwing a 'sproing' into the wall for entertainment but now I read 6 hours and I think, maybe not. Alternatively, we could screw one into a block of wood and just remove said wood when we're sick of it!
We've spent a fortune on 'thinking' toys and the other squishy ones but just like a human baby, the thing he fires up over and loves are the cheap stack of measuring cups I had for the late Terrier. Much click-clack noise and growling.
Oh my God, I keep saying so often 'This too shall pass.' I just need to live long enough to see it happen. Do 73 year old parents die from being sleep-deprived, hopping on one leg because of nails digging into feet, and playing dog games?
I'm loving this chronicle of the new terrier. I'm living vicariously through your experiences. But I'm happy to sleep through the night (sorry!-I know how hard sleep is to come by in the best of times).
Yin and Yang is good to keep in mind this time of year in the N Hemisphere. I try to remember the cold and dark won't last forever, and I need to be present here, now and enjoy what I am seeing and feeling. And then again, somedays I just want to be numb until it all goes away and there is more sun. Yin and yang. Thanks for a lovely post!
Hang on in there, Sabrina - spring is coming! Start watching the snowdrops - we've got a tiny show of white on TWO of ours, and I'm going out daily just to see how they're doing! And there's ONE daisy on the lawn! And the other bulbs are up! Spring's unstoppable, really it is. Hugs! xxx
I noticed a monty Don pic today and he had snowdrops. Also Highgrove had them in the Stumpery, so I think its fair to say that spring is definitely close.
Jim’s been commissioned by a client to shoot the snowdrops (camera, not gun!) in the grounds of a castle next week - they should be in full swing by then! Just hope the weather will be at least halfway decent!
He is. We are learning that his biting comes when he's overtired and ready for a sleep, or at the 5-8 'happy hour.' We dress like medieval knights at that point and I tell you, the light flashes off his fangs!
But by and large he's so good. He comes to us when we call him, he plays a Theo sort of fetch, he sits on command, he is gradually working out what a leash is and he is almost house-trained as long as we keep our wits about us. But best of all, he has had three nights in a row where he slept from 8PM until 7 AM. We so want to say we finally there, but my husband says lets get 7 under our belt. Just for safety...

I spoke too soon. It was a one off - although we got to 5 hours last night...
I'd love 5 hrs sleep, I'm an awful sleeper xxx <3 <3 , hopefully though he will get better for you x

what a ride you are on, and how special it is to be his new favourite carer.
have i missed it or are you not sharing but what is his name?
No, you haven't missed it, Kate. I don't usually share family or pet names on social media, if i can help it.
So this little chap is the Young Terrier or Pup.
And yes, what a ride. The word 'knackered' comes to mind!
he's too too cute! Happy new terrier...

Hahah! Susan..."sproing, sproing, sproing...!" I can imagine the madness of those 6 hours. And what a fun name for your furry friend.
We don't have pets or children, but I DO have a husband who is obsessed with those springy doorstops - he sproings (repeatedly!) every one he comes across. 🙄
And he's 56. 🤣
That undid me completely, Rebecca! I have visions of Jim sitting on the floor, just sproing-ing away and as happy as a pig in mud. Do take a pic!

This is sooo funny. Can we have a picture one day? I want my husband to make one for the pup. What a hoot!

That's such a good laugh!

Such a sweet account of having a new one in the house and the losses and gains that come along with it, mentally and physically. Enjoy that sweet pup.
Mostly he's a delight. And then there's a moment... oh my lord!
❤️ 🐾
Hang in there...sleep when you can. Take heart; Easter is coming!

I so relate, Sabrina. I just want to be numb until the Pup is older.
Despite a total of 8 hours sleep for we parents over the last night, I felt worse for it. Young pup of course was frolicking with the best of 'em!
Anyway, he's 10 weeks old tomorrow and we will have had him for two weeks on Friday (feels like 2 years!) and we're all still alive! Yay!
Hugs! xxx
You are so kind Rebecca, thank you! xx

How lovely!
I love the joy shining through these puppy posts!
Isn't it nice to think that a little 2.75 kg furry bundle can bring joy to us all? I'm so glad.
Oh Prue, he's a delight, a joy..... and yes, for now, an exhausting one! I've loved every word of this beautiful post!
There's something they tell new mothers, isn't there - 'sleep when the baby sleeps'! I gather it's not as simple as that, though! xxx

Oh, this all sounds absolutely WONDERFUL! x
