In the same way that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so is ‘exoticness’. A petite thermos flask sounds absolutely wonderful! What a great addition to a bag in this chilly weather. Such a cold winter up our way. Take care and enjoy your walks. Hugs dear Prue.
I don't think the Thermos would fit in my handbag, Beth. It’s quite chunky. But perfect for a daypack on those cold but achingly sunny winter hikes. BUT … maybe I can find a handbag-sized one as I’m not really a cafe-goer. Thanks for the idea!
I thought it might have just been me out and about this winter noticing the cold compared to last year, but it seems everyone is feeling it. Trouble here is it's a dry cold, no rain to speak of. Beautiful but dry. XXXX
Winter started late, but finally hit with a vengeance! I keep reminding myself that it is good to have proper seasons.
And a friend has a very cute little thermos that she uses for lactose-free milk to go with her cuppa. Bought at Big W. Hoping you find something suitable. Enjoy!
Oooh, thanks Beth! I have to go to Big W next week to buy a soccer net for grandson’s birthday. I will investigate. Might have a look online in the mean time.
I love your mother's handbag. It's beautiful. I also love all the vintage smoking accessories - even though I've never been a smoker. There's something so elegant about them. My mum carries secateurs for exactly the same reason as your friend. The kitchen window sill is full of vegemite jars with water and cuttings in them.
My favourite secateurs are FELCO no. 7 Professional I think Jeff bought me them for my 40th birthday, I'm still using them at 70!!! They weren't cheap, but they sure have lasted. When I retired one of my gifts was another pair. ( I do have some spare ones too that I bought when they were on offer, so I guess they'll outlive me. I love taking cuttings and growing them on. My handbag has all sorts in them, mints, wet wipes, diary pen painkillers and so on. I love my thermos, we have several a big one for traveling, a small one for the car, but more a drinking cups good for a cuppa in the winter. Also got one for cold drinks, to keep cool when out and about :)
I'm m sure we must save a fortune. I don't mind going into independent cafe for a cuppa, but not into Starbucks and the like. I ought to have some secateurs in my bag too xx
I love Felco. But Libby, I’m terrible at losing secateurs. Even though I wear a tool-belt, I often put secateurs on the top of weeds and prunings in a bin and tip the lot in the back of the ute ready for the tip. Along with the secateurs. Carelessness pure and simple, even though they may be bright orange or luminous green!
My mom, lovely and elegant in her linen palazzo slacks and Cuban heels ( even to garden!), always had a few Werther's butterscotch in her clutch purse. When we were gathered to spread her ashes at the head of their cove, I brought a bag of Werther's to share and with tears and smiles we all ,from 4 years old to 95 years young enjoyed the sweet memory.
Lovely reflections, Prue, and I agree with your assessment of Lindsay's stories--comfort and ease mingled with that touch of je ne sait quoi.
I think your mother's handbag is exotic in its own right, as is the fact that you hike and swim in winter, learn ballet in your 70s, and are writing yet another novel. It's all in your perspective, I suppose. I remember when someone said they saw me as something of a renegade because I'd lived on a sailboat and homeschooled my kids. Funny, because I'd have said I was more of a follower! 🙃 Suffice to say, best I can tell you don't need to change at all!
Noting the music: I'm a little surprised my parents didn't have any of Lyman's work, given they were in Hawai'i in the early-mid-50s. Mom probably thought it was too exotic!
I would always have thought you were a leader - you seem together and self-possessed, strong and lit by a fire.
It’s strange how we see ourselves, isn’t it? I don’t see myself as anything really, apart from a mum and friend. But never a leader or follower and certainly never a trendsetter - just me. The little solitary who is generally at peace, and grateful for her lot in life.
I was just in conversation with a close friend here about how it could be valuable to experience the fullness of how others see us. I can feel myself squirming internally at the mere idea of sitting among friends listening to their perceptions of me.
I'm not NOT a leader, but my best self shows up more as an organizer, which might not be the same thing. I appreciate you and your peace more than words are allowing me to express just now. ☮️
Mother, novelist, sea-swimmer, sheep-farmer, ballet dancer, Womble-Mum and so much more…I consider you to be quite amazing, Prue, and certainly enough to be called “exotic”!
The Iris photo was a hoot! (There’s exotic, and there’s “so-far-over-the-top-you’re-in-a-different-stratosphere”!) Thank you for another fun and lovely read 😊
Me? Exotic? But I don’t wear enough bangles, bright colours and beads! Can you imagine the pup hanging off those beads? As it is when I sit on the ground, he jumps at my pony tail hair, using my back as a support!
I guess I'm a little bit of all the things you list, Susan, but like I said to Elizabeth, really I’m just me - Mum to my family mostly and that’s fine.

Maybe that’s it! Maybe I need a pair of secateurs small enough to carry in my handbag.
