I used to collect charms for my charm bracelet but stopped when it became too hard to get them soldered on! I admit to some sentimental keepsakes & over the years these are memories from my late parents & from being "grandma" to 8. I loved reading your update & coffee cake as small patty cakes is a fave with me right now!

But the most important thing is - what is your lucky charm? Thanks for reading, Denyse.

My daughter and I purchased a tiny lion made from soapstone from a trinket stall on the Western compound when we lived in Saudi. She was about 5 or 6 and Mr Soapy, as he became known, sat on her bedroom shelf for many years. Rachel is now 36 and over the years, we have passed Mr Soapy back and forth between us as a good luck charm. When she moved to London to work, she found him tucked lovingly inside her suitcase. He sat on top of the filing cabinet next to my desk for several years as I wrote. He is now in her care as she embarks on a new and happy phase of her life with her new partner who will, I hope, become her husband. Mr Soapy is a sign of the love and strong bond that we share, not only as mother and daughter, but also as good friends.

That’s a beautiful story, Rosy, and may he live between your houses for many years to come.

In fact, it’s an idea for a story… ooh, I love it when inspiration strikes! XXXX

Thanks, Prue. I never dreamt, all those years ago, that this tiny lion would become such a beautiful and important part of our lives.

Thank you for your writing Prue. I look forward to it. 😊 I don’t have any ‘lucky charms’ as such, however a small quartz stone picked up on a Tasmanian beach and handed to me by my father as we walked and talked remains special to me. Tucked away in the pocket of the same coat I was wearing that day many years ago and still wear today. My hand finds it every time, tucked deep in that pocket. An instant special moment of memory felt tactile ♥️

Thanks so much, Kim.

I’m guessing in its own way, that quartz stone might be your lucky charm. It has a beautiful history. Memories create such a lovely warmth, don’t they? XXXX

So glad that the Pup is sleeping 18 hours a day. He sounds a surprisingly good choice for an older couple. And you’ve clearly built a wonderful bond. Good on you for still swimming too! Way too cold up this way. Such a freezing winter although this afternoon was the best weather we’ve had in months! Sending heaps of hugs. Enjoy your crafting.

He’s a sweet boy, that’s for sure. He has a certain amount of bullishness - a JRT trait, but generally, he’ll do anything for a treat and he rests when we want to put our feet up. It’s a good arrangement.

Re the chill, OMG - I said to my husband today that there’s only two articles of clothing one needs consistently and that’s a padded vest and a padded jacket. Oh, and woollen socks, a woollen beanie, a good scarf and woollen gloves...

Yep. They’re very well worn items of clothing this year.

i wish i had a lucky charm, i miss the time when i wasn't cynical and jaded, and believed in magic, luck, and rose tinted glasses.

I think it’s really hard to prevent ourselves from being jaded and cynical - sometimes I think it’s just part of age-ing. Or the twisted world in which we live. Sometimes, I feel I need to give myself a good old-fashioned face-slap.

But then nature (and my dog) is probably the best remedy. I find one can’t deny the simple beauty and then the cynicism just falls away.

What a good topic! I had to think about this one: I've had various good luck tokens over the years, but not one consistent good luck charm. One thing I used to do when I was 12 and 13: play a specific tune first thing in the morning as I was sure if I played it I would have a great day. Of course I have no memory if it worked! Later on, I have worn certain special jewellery items that were given to me by various friends when I wanted the friends close to my heart, or for bravery on days when I needed their special strength by my side. But no one time, forever sort of charm. ❤️

Your cake looks delicious!

It seems as if everyone has their own way of fortifying themselves when they need strength.

Goodness! I've just realised that the above sounds as if everyone’s having a restorative brandy! ;)

The amulets of life! My mother had a collection of tiny stuffed moose and I got the one with angel wings that watches over me wherever I am. I believe! And the small tokens from places you have gotten to experience? Crucial as well, I think, to the fondness of the explorations and the checked box on something you wanted to do....thanks for the little ramble down memory lane. J

Interesting, this! I don't have a lucky charm as such - which really surprises me about myself actually - but I find that I cannot and do not ever change the rings that I wear anymore. I do feel unmoored without them especially since one was my mother's. So I guess it's a similar idea. I have an entire host of bits and pieces on my desk which comfort me as well - a scrap of beehive, a feather, a stone my son found for me when he was little. Mostly from nature aside from bits of china and beach glass. If you know, you know! xo

These little “bits and pieces,” especially from one’s kids, are the most precious, aren’t they?

Ahh...I wrote a whole comment then managed to delete it before posting. :sigh:

I have my mom's charm bracelets and hear they are coming back in style.

While I've had some trinkets here and there--little metal pocket charms, a feather and a goddess; a persimmon seed, a crystal--there's never been any one item that stayed with me over time. I'm impressed that your porcelain cherub is still intact after so much time in your handbags. Mine get far too much abuse, I'm afraid, to be a safe place for anything fragile.

Back in my girlhood, I found a tiny, 4" Steiff teddy bear (similar to this: https://www.rubylane.com/item/2025091-RLx20-x201802/Steiff-Teddy-Bear-Caramel-smallest-4) that was a very special little friend. I still have him, though at some point he sustained a burn from being placed too close to a light bulb. 🤷‍♀️

You mum's coffee cake looks divine!

Womble is exceptional.

Your embroidery is so very special.

Love knowing about all these parts of you, Prue.

Thank you for your most appreciated compliments.

A little Steiff! The Antiques RoadShow would be impressed!

My cherub is quite a solid little being, well-covered shall we say. To be honest, I think it's remarkable that he always knows where he’s got to be and when. But that’s the mystery of charms, isn’t it? Most of my handbags have a zipped pocket and that’s usually where he lives safely. I’ve never had big bags where he could get lost. I’m hoping by saying all this, I haven’t put the mockers on him.

🧸 Bear twins! :)

I just retrieved mine from the shelf it shares with other childhood treasures and, in fact, can't be sure it's Steiff. There are no tags, and its shape makes me think maybe it is a knock-off. But I do have some Steiff that belonged to my brother (born in 1952) with that unique, similarly textured fur. So who knows?!

I was immensely charmed by “Charming…”! When I was a kid, my siblings and I were big on rabbit’s feet lucky charms, which seems quite gory now!

The Womble grows more handsome by the day! He really seems to be settling into being a wonderful companion, and I do like to think you’re spot on, that he’s thinking, “I’m here for you, Mum…” 😊
