Dear little puppy dog. I do so hope he’s ok. Dogs and ticks are a dreadful mix. That’s one bit of my past I definitely don’t want to revisit. Sigh.
I listened to GANGajang - ah the memories - but haven’t yet dipped into the linked Substacks. It’s 4:40am and I really should be sleeping but…
Substack has been a little hard to read lately. I try to focus on the ones that focus on the positive, but it’s important to be aware of the rest, but my goodness those blogs can be a hard read. Sigh. So I’ll indulge in a little nostalgia too and remember times when truth and integrity and scientific facts were rated more highly.
My own life has involved a lot of memories lately. I’m doing the big cleanup, dropping off carloads of old goodies to book fairs and collectibles collectors. In a few hours I’m filling the car with five tubs of art frames for the local art society and my old mixmaster for a friend who was finally about to buy herself one. Lovely to see old things put to good use.
May us old things get through this bout of dreadfully hot weather with gardens and sanity more or less intact. Take care dear Prue. 🤗🤗
He's much better thanks, Beth, but lacking a little energy. He's such a little trooper -
husband and self love the little fellow so much. The vets have given him a 6 month long- acting tick prevention med. And as well as that he's had anti-serum for the bite, so I guess it's no wonder he's tired.
4.40AM!!!! You are naughty!
yes, some of the posts are beyond me, I'm afraid. The ABC news headlines tell me much and after that I just need to stay calm and so I rely on the escapist posts to soothe the savage beast.
Golly, you have done a huge clean up! It is satisfying to know you are helping others as you downsize and simplify. I've yet to tackle the books. That will be a hard one.
We have watched weather north of Bass Strait in dismay and horror. I think you are all incredibly stoic. Heat and I don't get on and by now, I suspect I might have purchased a ticket to Hobart. Our summer has been terrible - windy, cool and grey on many days. But the last 2 or 3 have been fabulous. Mid 20's... utterly bearable.
Thanks Janine. He's much better but must be kept quiet for 4 days. He actually is not quite as bouncy as normal and I wonder if the tick-bite makes animals feel a little like they have the flu? Our chap has also had anti-serum to reverse the bite toxin and quite a dose of other meds as well. That's probably making him a little seedy too. But he's eating, drinking and happy to see those he loves. So onwards...
Poor little chap - sounds like he’s doing well and very lucky. We had a very close call with a cat we inherited when we moved into our house. Being from the UK I had never heard of paralysis ticks and didn’t realise how deadly they are to pets.
I spend not insignificant amounts of time considering the past, and if that's unacceptable, well, too bad! That said, I've been with people who seem to cling to their glory days with stories and sports memories, something I find a bit tiresome. I guess, as with so many things, balance is key. I'm with you on appreciating displays of respect, even if it is too "gendered" for some. And my girls seem to appreciate it to, which I find validating.
Whilst I try so hard to live in the day and the moment, I do feel that nostalgia and the past has its place as a strengthening mechanism for those who need it (me...)
Ganggajang's song is so iconic, so quintessentially Australian. Rather like Men at Work's I Come from a Land Down Under which was our anthem on Rhode Island when Australia beat the US at the America's Cup. Those were the days when yachts looked like yachts and not missiles!
I suspect that many people are revisiting the past more regularly these days because the present is so unsettling! That said, I do think nostalgia has an important function all its own just because it's how we keep important memories alive and share them with others. Keeping one's personal jigsaw together is exactly right! I do hope that your Womble has shifted to Terrier-ist recovery mode, I've been thinking of him and especially since ours got into a bin this week and ate his own weight in used tissues! Gah! Just when you think you know a dog lol. Fortunately, he ... um ... was only "renting" them so a happy ending - and clean up - ensued. You cannot trust these little opportunists! Enjoy Mark Carney, most of us here are in love with him and his calmness.
I think he's seen as that, Susan. Certainly in the Commonwealth, anyway. I can't wait to see what eventuates from his visit to Australia in March, and speaking to our Parliament.
Oh, most certainly, Prue! What I’m truly hoping for is that certain voters in this country can see a glimmer of the kind of statesmanship their choice lacks, and which we need so greatly.
The sad thing is that I can't see anyone with statesman-like qualities except for Bernie Sanders. But then I only see what mainstream media send out to the rest of the world and there could be some humble, wise and empathic people that we outside the USA know nothing about.
Thank you for this, Prue. With the threat of censorship hanging over the heads of mainstream media in this country, it’s difficult to judge what is truly going on. Sadly, almost all of the moderate conservatives in Congress have been forced out, and the ones who are left don’t dare vote their consciences.
Mum and I got together recently to have a look through some of her late mother's old photographs and ephemera, and I learned so much about the family and could see straight away from what we looked at and the stories we shared quite how much of people past live on in us.
Poor little woof. I hope he's doing much better. Actually, I'm about to read your latest post (I'm behind, as ever, having been away), and I'm hoping to read some good news about his recovery. xxx
YES!!! It was extraordinary timing - it was the day before I set off on my travels to meet Sabrina, and I couldn't believe it when I saw the postcard! Mum kindly let me have it to give to her, and I'm writing about it - and our meet-up - at the moment for my next post!
Hurrah for the Pupsicle! That's such lovely news. xxx
Oh Prue, what a scare you’ve had with your precious Womble…I’m so happy to hear he’s recovering. And thank goodness for the anti-tick serums and preventions.
I’m right there with you, letting go of the cares of the world for at least a while, losing myself in my novel-in-progress. I’m glad your writing is going so splendidly!
I haven’t had a chance to dive into your Substack links, but will have a read tomorrow!

Hope you puppy dog soon recovers- paralysis ticks are major issue for us in Queensland too

The song is new to me and fun to watch/listen to. It struck me as having aTalking Heads quality to it, and it looks like I wasn't off the mark on that. https://xpressmag.com.au/ganggajang-the-sounds-of-then/
My first-ever taste of Pavlova (and passion fruit) was on my first trip down under in 2022. Amazing!! Happy Australia Day!!
Hope the Womble is feeling better and better. Ticks are gross.

Womble gaining ground daily, thank you.
Take care... X

Oh Stanley! You little devil. The phrase 'ready-wrapped' comes to mind...
I laughed aloud with this, Sue! Gobbling used tissues but only “renting” them, ha!
Yay for Mark Carney! As I’ve said previously, he is a statesman who should be a top voice on the world stage!

Thank you for sharing my piece! I enjoyed your angle on nostalgia :)
'Out with lanterns' - wonderful!

So thrilled that you and Sabrina met. What a lovely thing to hear, Rebecca. Hence the postcard?
The Pupsicle is fighting fit again, thank you. XXXX
